Day 4 [School Trip to Washington D.C.]

Sunshine in the Capitol! We finally had a beautiful day at the Potomac River and Mount Vernon. We toured George Washington's home and the grounds and saw his and Martha Washington's final resting place. The home was decorated with bright colors in the British style of the time. We learned that he and Martha had over 600 visitors in one year! We also saw his private study where he had a swivel chair and a chair with a fan attatched- modern technology for the time. We saw the Wharf and the Spirit of Mount Vernon. Then we went to a mock farm and saw and fed sheep and cows, and watched a horse plowing with an Early American plow.We also saw the Necessary- a two-hundred year old outhouse! We shopped in the gift shop while we waited for our reservations at the Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant. After an hour of waiting we had a wonderful colonial meal of salmon corn cakes, shrimp salad, chicken salad, and turkey pot pye. We thanked our chaperones with a meal on us! It's been a wonderful trip and we're going to be sad to leave in the morning.

Day 3 [School Trip to Washington D.C.]

Here comes the sun! First we drove to Arlington National Cemetery and saw the graves of the Kennedys, William Howard Taft, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We also saw the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We toured Robert E. Lee's home and the largest mass gravesite from the Civil War- 2111 unidentified soldiers! We ate lunch and shopped at Union Station then headed to the White House Visitors' Center. We wanted to take a picture in front of the White House but learned that it was closed off for the State dinner with the President of Mexico. We then took the Metro back to Union Station and took the Twilight Tour of the Monuments with a great tourguide named John. We saw the Lincoln, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and World War II Memorials in the dark. We even saw the light in the Capitol- meaning the House or Senate is in session- at 11 at night! We drowsily drove back to our hotel after a sixteen-hour day and finally got to bed at midnight. More tomorrow from Mount Vernon....

Rain, rain, didn't go away! First we stood in line for almost an hour in the cold and rain at the National Archives... but it was WORTH IT! We saw the Magna Carta, the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, and an exhibit on the Civil War. Then, still in the rain, we headed to the Air and Space Museum. We split into two groups and saw World War II aircraft, L.E.M, Cold War missles, and many spacecraft. We had lunch at the McDonald's in the food court. From there we headed to the Natural History Museum, where we saw the Hope Diamond- 45.52 carats! Then we saw a bit of the Ancient Western Cultures section and headed off to the American History Museum. There we saw the Ruby Slippers, Fonzie's jacket, Kermit the Frog, and many more at Pop Culture! We saw the ORIGINAL Star Spangled Banner- 32x30 feet- made by Mary Pickersgill. We also saw the inaugural dresses of every first lady- inclulding Michelle Obama's dress! We also saw their china and memorabilia. We saw Julia Child's kitchen and watched her make garlic mashed potatoes with TWENTY-EIGHT CLOVES of garlic! We saw an exhibit on the wars and saw a steel column from the 70th floor of the South Tower of the World Trade Center. Then we got a surprise- when we went outside, it had stopped raining! We walked gleefully to the Holocaust Museum and saw all the interesting exhibits and impactful displays in the museum. Then we hopped on the Metro and headed to the Hard Rock Café with the Bradens' relatives. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner and had a lively trip back on the Metro and returned at 10 pm. See you again tomorrow!...
